References: Andrew Alpern, The New York Apartment Houses of Rosario Candela and James Carpenter (New York: Acanthus Press, 2001) LPC, “Architects’ Appendix,” Hamilton In the Morningside Heights Historic District, Candela’s work is represented by the Georgian Revival style apartment building at 425 Riverside Drive. Candela’s designs are also found in the Upper West Side/Central Park West, Expanded Carnegie Hill, Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill Northwest, and Park Avenue Historic Districts, as well as Riverside-West End Historic District Extensions I and II and West End-Collegiate Historic District Extension. Two large apartment houses and the Stanhope Hotel (all on Fifth Avenue) within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Museum Historic District are designed in a refined yet imposing style to effectively contrast with the townhouses of an earlier era along Fifth Avenue. Candela designed six luxury apartment buildings on Fifth Avenue in the Upper East Side Historic District the designs of these buildings were inspired by the details and compositional methods of the Italian Renaissance. He was associated with the Walt Whitman Houses and Raymond Ingersoll Houses (originally Fort Greene Houses), projects for the New York City Housing Authority. Among his more interesting projects was the former United States Embassy building in London (the lower stories were the work of noted architect John Russell Pope, while the upper residential stories were by Candela). In addition to many Manhattan apartment buildings he designed several public schools in New York and Baltimore. Noted as the architect of many large luxury apartment houses on the Upper East Side, Candela was also responsible for the design of a variety of buildings throughout his career. Those looking for a deal won’t get off easy here: Monthly common charges are $1,517 and taxes are $1,295.Born in Sicily, Rosario Candela came to the United States at the age of 19 and graduatedįrom the Columbia School of Architecture in 1915. The apartment is on the market for $2.5 million with Shannon Helms Wisniewski and Gilbert Simrall Meem at Stribling. The kitchen could use some updating, as could the interiors (gotta love that round bed), but the apartment has its perks: a full bathroom off of the bedroom, a powder room off of the foyer, five deeded storage lockers in the building, and that wraparound terrace with great views of Philip Johnson’s 550 Madison Avenue. A wood-burning fireplace at the far end overlooks an open living area. A water tower hovers over the outdoor space provoking that extra New York City feel. The petite apartment is a true building topper, surrounded in white brick and set back to allow for a wraparound terrace. While it isn’t a text book example of a Candela penthouse, and most certainly isn’t one of his expansive, jaw-dropping apartments that still set records, the new-to-market penthouse at 40 West 55th Street is a Candela penthouse nonetheless. Although critic Christopher Gray once wrote that owning such an apartment was to “accede to architectural as well as social cynosure,” Candela is also well known for his set-back penthouses, surrounded by terraces overlooking New York. The name Rosario Candela brings to mind prewar apartments with gracious layouts that, these days, fetch in the many millions.
